Biblical Counseling

What is Biblical Counseling?

The approach I use in counseling is called biblical counseling. What do I mean when I say “biblical counseling”? Here is how leaders in the biblical counseling methodology and I myself would describe the biblical counseling approach:

Biblical counseling is a form of counseling that uses a biblical framework to view and understand life, people, and problems. This means that as I listen to your story and your struggles, I use a biblical perspective and biblical categories to understand and provide direction for what you are experiencing.

Biblical counseling is Christ-focused and gospel-centered- The biblical counseling model holds that you can experience meaningful help and lasting change within the context of a relationship with Christ. In counseling, I will seek to help you grow in your personal relationship with Christ by showing you how relating to Christ and taking hold of his gospel can bring help and transformation to your difficulties.

Biblical counseling concentrates on heart-transformation- Biblical counseling aims for the most meaningful and lasting kind of transformation you can have- the transformation of your heart by growing in knowledge, trust and love of the living God! This means our counseling process will concentrate on helping you see your heart condition and seek needed heart changes.

Biblical counseling views humans as embodied souls shaped by a world of influence- I see individuals as both body and soul and seek to address both the physical and spiritual components in my care for people. I also recognize the influence relationships and culture can have on people and consider these factors to provide thoughtful care.

Biblical counseling believes the local church is important for people to experience care and change- this means I’ll encourage you to consider and take hold of the various graces and helps available to you through your local church.

Biblical counseling seeks to be theologically-sound by basing its counsel on an orthodox, evangelical Christian understanding of the Bible. I am committed to the theological and doctrinal commitments expressed here by the Biblical Counseling Coalition.

Lastly, biblical counseling is an established approach to counseling first established by the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation (CCEF), taught at Westminster Theological Seminary (WTS) and developed over the past four decades. My training at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (SBTS) and my personal study and application of counseling draws from the foundational counseling philosophy and approach of CCEF. I am also a partner of the Biblical Counseling Coalition and am committed to their core approaches to counseling as expressed here.
